The Unstoppable Simone Biles: From Prioritizing Mental Health to Making History

In 2021, Simone Biles made headlines worldwide when she decided to step back from the Tokyo Olympics to prioritize her mental health. This bold decision sparked conversations about the importance of mental well-being, especially in the high-pressure world of elite sports. It was a move that emphasized the message that mental health is just as critical as physical health.

The Courage to Prioritize Mental Health

Simone's decision to withdraw from several events at the Tokyo Olympics was met with both support and scrutiny. All of her fans and those who could relate supported her. But you had a few people like a top Mental Performance Coach, who we will call “Jim”,  who saw her withdrawal as weakness. He posted a picture of her and wrote “winning takes you to hell and if you quit that is where you will stay.”  I am a huge fans of "Jim" by the way, but I was not not feeling his jab at Simone.


In a sport where the physical and mental demands are incredibly high, her choice to prioritize her safety and well-being was groundbreaking (and I FULLY supported it). Biles cited experiencing "the twisties," a dangerous mental block that affects gymnasts' spatial awareness during routines. By taking a step back, she not only protected herself from potential injury but also opened up a broader discussion on the pressures athletes face and the need for mental health support. 


A Setback for a Bigger Comeback

Fast forward to 2024, Simone basically said “allow me to reintroduce myself”....and has proven once again why she is considered the greatest gymnast of all time. My girl returned to the world stage with a renewed focus and determination. Her comeback has been nothing short of amazing, ending in her achieving the record for the most World Championship medals in gymnastics history. #YouGoGirl

Lessons in Resilience and Mental Health

Simone Biles' journey from the 2021 Olympics to her record-breaking achievements in 2024 is a powerful narrative of resilience, strength, and the importance of mental health. Her story teaches us several valuable lessons:

  1. Mental Health Matters: Biles' decision to step back in 2021 highlighted the importance of mental health. It showed that seeking help and taking necessary breaks are vital steps toward overall well-being and long-term success. It also showed that YOU are responsible for your mental health, and at the end of the day you MUST do what is best for you.

  2. The Power of Resilience: Biles' ability to bounce back after a challenging period demonstrates incredible resilience. Her dedication to her sport and her ability to overcome obstacles (and haters) is a testament to her mental toughness and passion.

  3. Redefining Strength: By openly discussing her mental health struggles, Biles redefined what it means to be strong. Strength isn't just about physical ability; it's also about having the courage to acknowledge and address mental health challenges. I always tell my clients: "speaking up and talking about your mental health is not a sign of weakness, it is actually a sign of strength!"

  4. Inspiration for All: Simone Biles' story is an inspiration not only for athletes but for anyone facing challenges. It reminds us that setbacks are part of the journey and that with determination and support, we can overcome them and achieve greatness.

  5. Don’t be like “Jim” - You never know what is inside of someone, don’t count them out just because of one incident. If they have the determination to go out there and win…THEY WILL!


Simone Biles' journey from prioritizing her mental health in 2021 to making history in 2024 is a remarkable story of courage and resilience. Her achievements go beyond medals and records; they inspire the entire world to value mental health and to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. 

As we celebrate her accomplishments, let’s also remember the powerful message she has shared with the world: Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.
